Arthritis
Arthritis and
Degenerative Joint Disease
80% of dogs over the age of 8 will have arthritis.
This can cause chronic pain and reduce their ability to move comfortably, significantly impacting their quality of life.
What does arthritis look like in dogs and cats?
Early arthritis can be hard to spot. They might not be as interested in playtime as they used to be, or they might not play for as long. They might seem stiff when they get up after resting.
They might struggle with stairs, or be reluctant to jump on the couch or their bed like they normally would.
Over time they might limp, lick at their joints, move slowly, or even seem suddenly aggressive when touched.

What can I do at home to help keep my arthritic dog or cat comfortable?
Providing ramps or small steps can help them avoid jumping and support painful or weakened limbs.
Ensuring they have comfortable padded beds in areas that aren't too cold can ease stiff and sore joints.
Keeping their weight managed so they aren't overweight will reduce how hard their joints need to work and help them move more easily.
Some gentle exercise is good for keeping joints moving comfortably. Regular gentle walks (not high paced running or jumping) can keep their muscles working and strong to support weakened joints.
