Storm & Noise Phobias

Storms & Noise Phobias

Southeast Queensland can get some epic storms, and lots of dogs and cats experience fear and anxiety during these periods. Other noise phobias maybe fireworks, or other looud noises.

What behaviours are seen in dogs or cats that are scared of storms or noises?

Many dogs will pant heavily, shake, and want to hide. They may seek you out for comfort, or they may try to escape the house or yard. Some dog can get very destructive and damage doors, windows or other property in their panic and their attempts to escape.

Cats will often simply hide.

Why is my dog or cat's behaviour during storms or other noises getting worse?

Each time they experience fear and anxiety during an event, their memory of it will cause them to feel anxious as the next event begins, and it worsens their fear with each event.

Every bad experience makes the next one worse!

How can I help my dog or cat that's scared of storms and noises?

You can create a safe and comforting space in your home that minimises some of the sounds and flashes of light. You can also use calming pheromones or supplements to help create a calm space and reduce their anxiety.

What else can I do if those things don't help?

Some dogs and cats experience such intense fear and anxiety that they need help from prescription medications. You can speak to us about what medications might help your dog or cat.
